Message from Lady Carla
Hello everyone, I’m…I'm ... well I don’t really know who I am or where I am. I know that I’m staying with a nice lady who’s been looking after me for many days and who calls me: my child, my crazy one, my baby, my Lady Carla.
It’s not very clear what happened to me or where I came from but everyone is really treating me very well, nothing like how it was before. Sometimes I hurt myself without meaning to as my legs seem to be damaged and they hurt me a lot. I think that I must be sick because I have to take 4 pills every 12 hours, plus another blue one that my Mommy says is to protect my tummy.
For the last few weeks the nice people have watched me all the time, night and day, and now I think that I’m getting a bit better and feeling less frightened.
Now when I wake up in the morning I’m not frightened and wondering how fast I’ll have to run to escape the bad people, or where to go to find a little food and water.
Now I only hear nice people saying: “Hello little one, how are you? Do you want something to help ease your pain, to eat or to drink?”
The other day I discovered something so wonderful - a human bed! Mmm ... I want one for me too. It’s so much more comfortable than my doggy bed! And I’m Lady Carla so I have to have the best bed, no? My Mommy didn’t tell me off when I tried to clamber on to the bed and I think that she was happy to see me trying to move around a bit – but not too much!
I was near an open window and there was such a lovely breeze that made me feel a bit better and so very very comfortable. Today we’re going back to see the vet in Madrid and we hope that he will say that I’m much better...
I have to go now so here’s a big lick to everybody. I’ve let this lady take my photos from head to toe ... How do I look, do you like me like this?

A little over two weeks ago Baas Galgo received calls saying that some kind people had rescued a Galga who had been hit by cars on the M40 in Madrid. They had seen that the greyhound was badly injured, stretched out on the hard shoulder and that no-one else had stopped to help her so they stopped their vehicle in the middle of the motorway so as to protect the dog from further injury. Thanks to Idoia, the Galga was very gently put into her car and immediately transported to the veterinary clinic of our dear friend and Honorary President of Baas Galgo, Carlos Rodriguez where she was treated straightaway.
The clinical assessment of this poor Galga was very grave – a fractured left shoulder, torn muscles, an open fracture of the left hind leg, intestines jolted out of place and multiple contusions. She needed her muscles to be bound back together, two drains, many parts of her body needed to be stitched up and the fractured leg and shoulder had to be immobilized.
She spent the first night at Cristina’s house, a volunteer who had offered to look after her but in view of her considerable injuries Lady Carla (as we baptized our dear little Galga) needed very specific care. Thus, the following day she was transferred to an emergency clinic near Cristina’s home and afterwards she was taken to Leticia's house in Toledo as Leticia is a rescue coordinator and is very experienced in handling such cases as serious as this.

After 5 days of total immobility Lady Carla and virtually all of the medical equipment that surrounded her were transferred to the veterinary clinic where she was to have her open fracture operated upon. Carlos Rodriguez and his excellent team of skilled professionals tried to put her leg back into place by inserting a metal plate and seven screws into the leg as the bone was extremely chipped and the skin around it badly torn up.
Animals as seriously injured as this need an enormous amount of intensive care and long term aid particularly greyhounds whose skin has difficulty tolerating stitches and sutures and becomes rapidly necrotic. As such it is necessary to constantly apply creams, Dertrase, dressings, antibiotics etc.

Thankfully all these treatments are slowly improving the health of Lady Carla, but the warm climate does not help the drainage. We continue to fight on a daily basis to save her leg, searching any and every sign of improvement.
Marisa and Natalia, two veterinary surgeons working at the “Huellas” veterinary clinic in Torrijos, are responsible for all daily treatments. Our deep thanks to these two major professionals who are equally very implicated in Galgo rescue activity in the province of Toledo.

We continue to care for Lady Carla in every way possible. She is really fantastic. In spite of her injuries she remains an exquisite young Galga, very quiet with wide beautiful eyes that look straight into your heart. The other day she even wanted to sleep in Leticia’s bed but we cannot allow it as we must not take any risks as her recovery will be long and difficult.
Please help us pay for Lady Carla's vet bills, we have spend over 1000 euros already!!
